Belonging Family Retreat

A radical new family-attachment retreat, providing two concurrent programmes for parents and young people aged 7-16, to learn how to reconnect with each other and the earth, in love, trust, and mutual respect.

Overview

We’ll be providing two parallel programmes for parents/carers and their young people aged 7-16, to learn how to reconnect with each other and the earth, in love, trust, and mutual respect.

It is so often the case, that amidst the relentless pace of modern life, we can find it challenging to properly nurture the relationships that are most important to us: those within our own families.

Parents and guardians trying to find balance between work-life commitments and focussed time spent with their kids can feel they are not doing enough to foster trust and friendship in those relationships, or that the quality of communication can be frayed.

The demands upon young people’s attention from social media, gaming, and potentially unhealthy peer groups, can add to the strain upon the parent-child relationship, with neither party feeling like they properly understand the other’s perspective.

Belonging is a 4-day retreat designed to gently weave families back together—in trust, in love, and in deep mutual respect.
This is not a parenting course. This is not a holiday camp. This is a call to remember who we are to each other and to the land.

Two Parallel Retreats. One Shared Journey.

Over four days, we’ll guide parents and carers through experiences of:

  • The psychology and neuroscience of the developing brain

  • The healing of intergenerational patterns

  • Practical tools for connection and communication

  • Restoring joy, presence, and play in family life

Meanwhile, young people aged 7–16 will:

  • Run wild across woodland and water

  • Learn woodland skills and tribal practices

  • Explore identity, expression, and belonging through story, movement, and serious play

  • Discover how to speak their needs, honour their boundaries, and hold hope in a world turned inside out

  • Together, you’ll reconnect with each other and the earth in a setting that is brave, nourishing, and alive with magic.

  • Held by the land of The Dreaming, and guided by practitioners from the Awen Project and Free We Learn, this is a space where families can breathe again, laugh again, and remember what it means to belong.

Each rooms interior reflect our passion for other cultures. Natural materials and tactile draping create den-like spaces, whilst original floorboards and textured walls give coherence and a cosseting feel to the seven rooms, each with its own distinct name and character.

The essence of connection thrives through our shared rooms. Our distinctive approach assigns beds individually rather than by room, encouraging meaningful interactions with fellow guests.

Embracing shared living is ingrained in The Dreaming’s values, creating an environment where bonds flourish.

The Location

Nestled in the heart of the Elan Valley, Wales. Our retreat offers a serene and rejuvenating environment, away from busy work life, whatever the weather.

Set within forty seven glorious acres of ancient land, The Dreaming is a rural wonder which offers true serenity and blissful tranquility. Once a 15th century Cistercian monastery, this fabulous property passed through Georgian and Victorian aristrocratic families to the designer Laura Ashley and her family in the 20th century.

Laura Ashley directed her multinational interior design company from Rhydoldog House and then, in 2020, our founder Charlotte Church, with the help of talented collaborators, reimagined, refurbished and reconfigured it.

“Words can’t describe the energy that this place holds, from the minute you arrive you can feel the magic. We had the most beautiful weekend with the most amazing people, I will cherish the memories for a lifetime.”

- Claire Wright

The Nurturer Guest, 2024

“I knew my time at The Dreaming would be a wonderful break in stunning surroundings but I was not prepared for it to be life changing. You leave The Dreaming wondering, "Was I dreaming?" but thankfully, it's all real.”
